Several people have inquired about sending packages to me in Tanzania. Here are some guidelines I’ve learned from other peoples’ experience:
- Plain, padded envelopes are the quickest and inexpensive way to send packages. However, the USPS does offer a flat-rate box as well. Those are cheapest options... though shipping is not cheap. Be careful!
- On customs forms, claim the items as "No Commerical Value; For Personal Use." If your post office won't allow this, please be as vague as possible. General descriptions such as Educational Materials and Missionary Supplies are good examples of general descriptions. Listing contents, especially electronics/DVDs, makes the package a target for theft. Also, the Tanzanian post office may think I intend to sell valuable items and charge me to "import" the items. In general, it is not recommended to send anything of high value. If you would be upset that the item didn't arrive, then it's probably best not to send the item via postal mail.
- The USPS asks for a monetary amount. Please be conservative (think garage sale prices) because there is a good chance I might pay up to half of whatever you write to get it out of customs. I could also pay up to half of any shipping insurance you put on the package, so it's best to avoid that option.
- Books and magazines are exempt from import taxes, so always describe them as such.
- Pack in Ziplocks to prevent damage from a spill (plus, I can reuse the Ziplocks!)
-Seal the package well to prevent theft.
-The average time en route is 3-5 weeks, but can be as little as 7 days to as much as several months.
